Same as last time, we will be giving away 20 free letterpress invitations and 20 free letterpress RSVP cards. Envelopes will not be included and neither will the obi/Japanese paper. Stork, a baby boutique in Brooklyn is now selling our cards – along with the cutest baby shoes ever!

Image

Hand-made baby shoes that I bought for my best friend's little boy.

Recently, Eyana, the owner of Stork, a new baby boutique here in Brooklyn, contacted us about our line of cards. We were so excited that she found us and couldn’t wait to partner up with her and check out her shop. So, last night we stopped by with our first delivery. She was interested in a couple of our baby-themed cards and we also modified some of our cards for her as well. In the near future we plan to start producing a line of letterpress baby shower invites and baby announcements, which we also plan to partner on with Stork.

As soon as we stepped inside the shop, we fell in love with nearly everything she had. Many of the items she carries in her shop are made in Brooklyn, or they are hand-made. It was pretty obvious that Caroline and I wanted to go on a spending spree, but we managed some restraint! Caroline purchased an adorable little onesie for her niece that has a kimono tie in front. I purchased these amazing, hand-made leather shoes for my best friend’s son as well as a cute little onesie with a big moon on it…or as I like to think of it, a huge wheel of cheese…since most typically my best friend and I can be found sipping wine and partaking in a cheese frenzy everytime see each other!

Stork is located at 726 Franklin Avenue, between Sterling and Park. It is rather close to the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, so take a weekend, bring your little ones to the museum and stop by Stork to check out all of the amazing items! To top it off, right across the street is a sweet little candy shop and ice cream parlor, The Candy Rush. Bring the kids there afterward to give them the sugar high of a lifetime!

A Day in the Little Tokyo Neighborhood of Los Angeles

A confection made of bean paste and wrapped in a cherry blossom leaf. The pink is sweet and the leaf is salty. Being a huge chocolate covered pretzel fan, I loved these. This particular sweet is seasonal and only available in January and February.

My husband was recently assigned to Los Angeles on a rather large project his office is working on. As I have never visited this city before, I thought this would be a great opportunity to visit and take a look around.

Yesterday, I wandered to the Little Tokyo neighborhood, located in downtown. I had read about the Japanese American National Museum and decided to stop by. It is a rather small museum but very well put together and certainly worth visiting. It focuses on the contributions of Japanese Americans, as well as the experiences of  Japanese immigrants to this country. One part of the museum showed a particularly dark moment in US history, the internment of American citizens of Japanese descent during WWII.

After touring the museum, I wandered around all of the wonderful shops. The weather out was perfect, not a cloud in the sky and in the 70s. Made me feel a little sorry for my friends back in NYC…but not that much!

I made a point to stop in Fugetsu-Do Confectionery. This little shop has been around and selling Japanese sweets since 1903. Everything looked so lovely, it was hard to pick. I love Japanese sweets, each one is a little piece of art. So, before I tore into them, I thought it might be nice to take a few photos.

This one was gone in seconds! One of their most popular it is mochi with a strawberry bean paste inside and a chocolate decoration on top.

Not exactly sure what this one is. But I really liked the clean lines and the square shape contained within the round shape.

No idea what this is either, but it seems almost too pretty to eat.

A display of sweets at Fugetsu-Do. I'll be back!

Our Japanese inspired letterpress wedding invite, with Swarovski crystals…and our wedding invitation give away!

Our Hyogo letterpress card. This cherry blossom pattern is based on antique kimono patterns.

After a bit of a break for the holidays, we are back! Just before we went on vacation, we printed these lovely invites. The bride-to-be picked deep red, black and sliver for her colors. To amp it up a little, we also added Swarovski crystals. We were very happy with the end result!

Also, we are having another LETTERPRESS WEDDING INVITATION GIVE AWAY!! We will be giving away 20 letterpress wedding invitations and RSVP cards. They will be letterpressed on our lush 118lb Savoy paper. All you have to do to enter the giveaway is email and enter your name to Caroline, her email can be found here. The deadline to enter is February 25th and we will announce the winner, here on our blog, on February 28th. So check back to see if it is you! The design we will be giving away is our Avignon design. You can see photos of it at the bottom of the page. It is based on an antique, French pharmacy tin from the early 1900s. We are in the process of letterpressing and photographing all of our designs for our website, so the winner will need to be ok with us photographing their invitation. Of course, additional invites can be ordered if needed.

The Etsy Holiday Gift Challenge – Buying a Gift for My Mother-in-Law

My mother-in-law as a young lady, so pretty.

On to the next Etsy Holiday Gift Challenge, my mother-in-law. Just to recap, I plan to purchase all of this year’s presents from Etsy or other small businesses/artists and my budget is $50 per person. I had wanted to do one blog post a day on this and so far, I am not doing too bad.

So, whenever I think of my mother-in-law, I think of deep and rich colors like cranberry, chocolate, eggplant and other jewel tones. These colors really set the stage for my latest list.

Lets start with this beautiful Holiday wreath by WildRidgeDesign. So pretty, I am now thinking about getting one for my door.

I love this smokey quartz pendant from SMV designs. I also love that this artist is located in Brooklyn, too! Wonder where I could see her jewelry in person?

It is chilly out! In fact the only time I left my house today was to go to the store (I tried to subsist solely on the stale Pirates Booty in my cabinet, but that wasn’t working out so well for me). Maybe if I had had this great scarf by BessetteArt, going outside wouldn’t have been such a daunting task.

My mother-in-law is a big fan of coffee, so I really see the following five gifts going together. It really would make a lovely morning, coffee served in a beautiful ceramic mug, cranberry and pistachio biscotti and cranberry sugar cookies all served upon a beautiful handwoven table runner.

So first with the coffee. This gift is for four months worth of membership to a coffee-of-the-month club from AproposRoasters.

Would love to have these cranberry and pistachio biscotti from notjustcookies with my coffee.

Yummy biscotti from notjustcookies.

These cranberry and dark chocolate, shortbread cookies by ButterBlossoms are totally tempting me! I also noticed that ButterBlossoms is located in Charleston, South Carolina, a city I have wanted to visit for a long time now.

Go Brooklyn! These ceramic travel mugs by yevgenia are just so pretty. I think my mother-in-law would really like them, too.

And all of these served on this pretty handwoven table runner by NutfieldWeaver.

I bet these cranberry soy candles by purebliss smell amazing.

Forget my mother-in-law, I need to get this spiced cranberry body lotion by Souhtern TwistedSoaps for myself!

It will be for after I use this cranberry chutney soap by SoapsByAlexandra. Wait, got side tracked, this is supposed to be a gift list for my mother-in-law!

Since we are on the topic of bath and beauty products, check out this cranberry and orange lip balm from LongWinterSoapCo. I could totally use some right now.

Ok, so this necklace is a little above my $50 budget, but it was just so pretty I had to include it…and it is from a Brooklyn artist, too! You can see this necklace and other great jewelry over at ThePeachTree’s Etsy shop

I think the color of this silk scarf from joyinmystudio would look lovely on my mother-in-law.

Love these delicate gold and cranberry earrings by PeriniDesigns.

I really like the color and shape of this cranberry salt pig from LittleWrenPottery.

And finally, we recently printed deep red, little heart letterpress cards. Maybe I will package up a few of these for my mother-in-law, as well. You can see them over at our Etsy shop. We have them blank inside or with a quote.

So, that wraps it up for my mother-in-law’s cranberry inspired list. As usual, I have no idea which of these great finds I am going to pick!

Thunder Soul – you must see this film!

The movie poster.

This past week, I went to a screening of a documentary on the Upper West Side with my mom. To be honest, I had no idea what I was going to see but she had some free tickets and I like spending time with her. I thought she might have said something about a “math teacher.” So we met outside the theater, got some snacks and a couple of enormous “medium” sodas and sat down…Turns out the movie was not about a “math teacher” but a music teacher. And not just any music teacher as we found out over the next hour and a half. The movie Thunder Soul was so fantastic, everyone in the theater was laughing out loud, crying and clapping. It’s a documentary on the Kashmere High School stage band in the 1970s and their band leader “Prof.” Conrad O. Johnson. You must see this film. I don’t want to give too much away but basically it tells the story of this amazing educator, a group of very talented students, and their success as a high school band. Kashmere High School is in Houston Texas and this was an all black stage band in the early-mid seventies. Think about the timing of the Civil Rights movement in this country and how these students were just getting opportunities their own parents never had. It is an amazing story – do not miss the opportunity to see Thunder Soul! Jamie Foxx is the executive producer.
