Our Antique French Letterpress Wedding Invitations

Our Avignon design in letterpress

This Saturday we letterpressed the invitations for our first contest winner! We are so excited with the way these invitations turned out. The design is classic and simple, so very French. The design is, in fact, inspired by an antique French pharmacy tin. We believe there are sources of beautiful design inspiration all around us…we just have to keep our eyes open!

Our neighbors have beautiful lavender flowers growing all through their back yard, of which they were happy to let us cut some!

This invitation measures 6.25×6.25 inches. Here we printed it on our ultra-lush, 236lb, brilliant white, Savoy paper. This stuff is amazing! We can’t wait to print our next round of invitations!

This design can also be made more rustic with the addition of twine and a kraft paper envelope.

The RSVP card. This paper is so thick, it makes for an amazing, super crisp and deep impression.

New Letterpress Wedding Invite Giveway & Winner Announcement!

Our next giveaway is perfect for Spring! Our Orleans design, based on the wood inlay on a piece of 18th century French furniture.

First off, a big thank you to everyone who entered our competition! We continue to be thankful for all the support we have gotten as we start out and grow our letterpress business.

Second, to everyone else who entered our contest, don’t despair, WE ARE HAVING ANOTHER GIVEAWAY!!! So, please re-enter. To enter the giveaway please email your name to caroline@pressedinbrooklyn. In fact, we will be having quite a few giveaways as we need to letterpress all of our designs for samples.

Third, we have a winner. Congratulations,  EMMA & MIKE. We look forward to creating beautiful invitations for your special day!

This time round, we are offering our Orleans design. Perfect for Spring, it is named for and inspired by the intricate wood inlay work on a beautiful piece of 18th century French furniture. Same as last time, we will be giving away 20 free letterpress invitations and 20 free letterpress RSVP cards. Envelopes will not be included. However, we will provide you with the dimensions and a link to where you can purchase matching envelopes. We plan to letterpress this invitation on bright white, 118lb Savoy paper. We are not exactly set on color yet, although we think the pink and grey combo is lovely. We are also not completely decided on font yet either, although the ornate script does look very nice. Also, same as before, the invites and RSVP cards are totally FREE, the only cost will be shipping. The only catch? You need to be ok with us photographing the invitations for use on our site. Of course, if you require more than 20 of each item, you can certainly purchase more.

The deadline for entering this giveaway is April 13th and we will announce a winner on April 18th. We will go to press at the end of April, so the winner will receive their invites by early to mid-May.

Our Orleans Design – for Wedding Invitations & Personal Stationery

Our floral Orleans pattern in pink. Based on a piece of 18th century French furniture from the Gulbenkian Museum. This is a letterpress card, pressed by us on a Vandercook.

I spent much of this weekend photographing our work. I can’t say I have ever been much of a photographer, but with practice I certainly hope to improve. This is our Orleans design. It can be used for both wedding invitations and personal stationery.  It is based on a piece of 18th century French furniture, with the most amazing wood inlay work, that I saw while on my honeymoon in Portugal. While in Lisbon, we spent an afternoon at the Caoluste Gulbenkian Museum. Their collection of furniture and art is impressive. I found many items here that inspired me.

It’s Alive!

Finally, FINALLY we have our letterpress up and running! Nearly three months to the date after we found him on ebay. He has been pretty cranky about being brought out of retirement, but Caroline was able to persuade him into helping us get a project done and meet our deadline. We finally got our rollers at the beginning of the week, but alas, they were too big! After Caroline tried to perform rudimentary surgery on these things using only a hacksaw and a prayer, her father was nice enough to lend us a hand and professionally cut them to size.

So, on Wednesday night, Caroline had the chance to get acquainted with our letterpress and, as she tells it, he was pretty anti-social at first! However, he warmed up to her eventually and she was able to print the beautiful cards we have below. Stay tuned for pictures of Caroline’s arm. The press put up quite a struggle, so in a couple months time we think Caroline will have an amazing looking, totally ripped arm from pulling the letterpress lever so many times, arm (not arms) being the key word here!

Another detail shot.

We packaged the stationery with the ribbon and our tag inside the box so that the client could wrap the box with wrapping paper of her choice.

We wrapped up a few extra cards for our friends.

We printed three different colors of this card, here is the deep pink color.

Our first job!

So, this week we sent out our first letterpress personal stationery! Below are some pictures of how we packaged it. It was so wonderful to see all of our efforts come together on a beautiful finished project. I suppose we had some fantasies about starting our own business. Dreams of sitting at a computer and drawing all day or spending time with the letterpress, mixing vibrant colors and experimenting with new types of paper. However, after spending hours doing cost comparisons of different types of paper, working with tons of vendors to find packaging and struggling to find rollers and other parts to our ancient machine, it is very exciting to finally see what all the background work led up to.  🙂
